There’s more to being a successful artist than a passionate point of view, a bit of training and a glass bedroom at MoMA. One of the most important aspects of a career in art is connecting with other artists, in terms of both creation and employment.
The fact is that art doesn’t happen in a vacuum (though it does occasionally happen by a vacuum); rather, an artist’s career is often viewed through the prism of his or her contemporaries. For example, one of the reasons Georges Seurat’s work is considered important (and we’re talking Broadway-level importance, here) is because it was partially a reaction to the Impressionism that dominated late 19th century art.
Likewise, an artist’s success can be in large part because of their counterparts. Street artists would likely be considered a bunch of hooligans with spray paint cans if Banksy and Shepard Fairey hadn’t broken into the mainstream, and legitimized a flood of contemporaries in the process.
This is all just a long way of saying that there’s a reason artists talk about art. It’s an important part of the creative process, and networking is one of the most important things an artist can do to get their work seen. The good news is that with the growth of creative events, digital artists and 3D designers have more opportunities than ever to meet each other, learn their craft, and expand their boundaries.
Over at Digital Arts Online, they have a post up about the importance of creative conferences. They’re talking specifically about the Brighton Digital Festival, but the reasons they give for the importance of conferences can be applied to any gathering of like-minded artists. In fact, the Gnomon Workshop has its own event coming up soon:
Gnomon Workshop Live is a special two-day event showcasing some of the top professionals and emerging talent in the entertainment industry. See presentations and demos by highly accomplished artists who will take you inside their own personal projects and processes. This event provides a rare opportunity to meet the artists, learn from their experiences and discuss issues important to the entertainment industry.
