Looking for inspiration? Maybe a way to diversify your design portfolio? I mean, we all think orcs are cool, but not everyone can work for Blizzard despite what trillions of drawings on the internet would have you believe.
A good way for designers to stand out is to try and incorporate some humor into their work. There are a whole lot of people out there who are trained in cell shading and 3D rendering, so anything you can do to stand out is incredibly valuable – especially skills like injecting humor or story into your visual work. That kind of thing shows you have range, and ultimately make you a more well-rounded and employable artist.
But it’s easier said than done. How do you make something funny? Play Benny Hill music while you design? A drawing of a whoopee cushion isn’t as funny as the real thing (and the real thing is hilaaaaaaarious). Let’s take a look at what some illustrators have to say about the ways they find humor in their work.
Ali Graham, who did an incredible series of illustrations imagining Jay Z’s 99 problems, says he tries to keep his funny idea as the drawing’s visual focus:
Focus on the funny. Humour has to be at the centre of everything within an image – the less distractions the better. It can be drawn from references or established preconceptions. If you’re familiar with the subject matter it makes it far easier to play and have fun with.
If you have an idea that you think is funny, obviously it should be the core of the image. Everything else that you create within the design should support, not distract from, that central focus.
But how do you pick an idea? John Leguizamon says you should find it within the familiar.
Start with what you know. Not all of us are clowns or comedians, but we all can appreciate what a good joke is. The key is not to try to be funny, but to find a way to relate and connect with your audience. Start with the inside jokes, make fun of yourself or make fun of your work.
So take what you know, find a unique point of view, and start creating! Benny Hill music is completely optional.
