In case you haven’t heard, Grand Theft Auto V is the biggest thing since the Beatles. And it’s about to take the Beatles and bludgeon them to death in a dark, Los Santos alley. In fact, the only things people like more than GTA V are sandwiches and the Bible… watch your back, sandwiches.
Seriously, GTA V grossed over a billion dollars in its first three days of release, beating Call of Duty’s previous record by a ridiculous 12 days (just goes to show people prefer breaking rules over enforcing them). That’s a lot of money.
For a little context:
- If Grand Theft Auto V were a movie, it’d already be the second-highest grossing movie of the year, and the 18th-highest grossing movie of all time.
- If Grand Theft Auto V were a person, it’d be as rich as JK Rowling. I bet a billion bucks buys a lot of butterbeers.
- Perhaps most impressive, if Grand Theft Auto V were a safe full of gold coins, Scrooge McDuck would swim in it.
Even more money is going to be rolling in soon, when GTA V moves online and to next-gen consoles. What does this mean for the future of the video game industry?
There’s going to be another Grand Theft Auto game
This decision is about as obvious as they come. Though Rockstar doesn’t yet have another GTA in development, there’s no doubt that they’ll move forward on yet another sequel to the pixelated murder machine that could.

More immersive games are coming
The more advanced consoles get – and with the imminent releases of the PS4 and Xbox One, they’re about to advance even further – the deeper and more immersive games are becoming. GTA V is huge, even compared to its predecessors. And it’s not the only near endless game out there; Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, and Batman: Arkham City have redefined the scope of games from several different genres. That’s not even taking into account MMORPG’s like World of Warcraft. Basically, any company that wants gamers to take them seriously is going to have to come up with something BIG.
Get ready for GTA knock-offs
The video game industry is just as full of copycats as movies or TV. Another round of Grand Theft Auto means another round of Grand Theft Auto ripoffs. But as long as they’re all as good as this one, I think we should be okay with that.
