The more devices and personal screens and liquid metal dystopian killing machines we have in our lives, the more opportunities there are for 3D designers. Each one is a potential delivery system for 3D content (or is a piece of 3D content in and of itself), meaning more jobs, more consumers, and more chances to find a creative use for 3D design.
One example of the expanding 3D marketplace is the 3D advertising for mobile devices being developed by Amobee. The ads, which use Amobee’s platform called Pulse 3D, have already been put to use for BMW, Expedia, and more. According to Digital Arts Online:
The mobile technology company, a division of SingTel’s Digital L!fe Group, said that the new platform allows advertisers to create realistic 3D ads that allow mobile users to engage with products in ways never possible before.
According to Amobee, Pulse 3D ads are based on a new hybrid architecture of HTML5 and native device technology. Pulse 3D ads are not only three-dimensional, but incorporate app-like features, location-based customisation, as well as other forms of rich media, including video.
The immersive, interactive ads may appeal to companies struggling to make mobile advertising actually work. In a new marketplace, 3D ads can stand out versus standard pop-up screens or sidebars. In fact, the demo ads seem to have the feel of a dedicated app, making them feel less like advertisements and more like branded content.

Amobee has also put in great effort to make the Pulse 3D ads easy to use.
The company said that the Pulse 3D platform delivers real-time 3D rendering in a mobile ad. Users can personally select which components of the ad they want to explore. For example, within a Pulse 3D car advertisement, the mobile user can spin the 3D car model in all directions, open the car doors, change the exterior colour, explore the details of the interior design, thus creating an unprecedented personalised experience.
Amobee is one of the only developers working in mobile advertising right now, but if they’re able to successfully engage consumers, more 3D designers are sure to follow. Kudos to them for thinking of a way to commercialize their design aesthetic; even if you’re not interested in advertising, that’s an idea that might be worth exploring.
Either that or start working on your liquid metal dystopian killing machines. Frankly, either one is pretty cool.
